    Description

United States Senator from Ohio John Glenn (1921-2016) boldly signed this chest-up photo of himself neatly dressed in a suit and tie with a slight smile on his face.
Glenn served as a fighter pilot during World War II and he also served in China and Korea. He was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, Glenn made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States and on that flight, an on-board camera captured the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the nation. He was chosen by NASA in 1959 to be one of the Mercury Seven, a group of military test pilots who would become America’s first astronauts. In 1962, on the Friendship 7 mission, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth and received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. He was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. In 1974, Glenn was elected as a Senator from Ohio, a position he would hold for 24 years (1974-1999), during which time, at the age of 77, he flew on Space Shuttle
    Discovery
’s STS-95 mission, and became the oldest person to fly in space.
