13) The RT. Honorable LORD WRAXALL
-
June 10th 1931- Letterhead SLOANE 4400 81. EATON SQUARE S.W.I - Letter regards sending a photograph of the Lord to Mr. Colby. There is only
1 signed letter from the Lord.
He states his only decent photo is one dressed in his
Masonic
garb. He had just been appointed to the Treasurer of His Majesty’s Household, in full dress uniform. He looks upon his visit to America with very great pleasure. He felt the Sesquicentenial celebration was a success stating that
Masonic
feeling in the
masonic
world had been improved without doubt. He was appreciative with the hospitality of Mr. Colby.
He speaks of Lady Wraxall and he attended functions such s the Derby run at Epsom , a very good race.
The winner was “Cameronian..”
The best horse won he states.
He states that possibly ¾ of a million watched the Downs.
He also attended the Trooping of the Color held normally on the Kings birthday, June 3
rd
,
but was held off to the 6
th
that year.
He states it is a magnificent pageant from the 1800’s with the battalion of Guards carrying the color of the Kings Guard.
His brother Colonel Evelyn Gibbs, was commanding the Coldstream Guards, and commanded the parade.
The king was present on horseback to inspect the troops,
followed by the playing of bands as the color was trooped down the lines of guards.
His brother lead the parade and at the end rode to Buckingham palace with His Majesty.
King George the Fifth was dealing with the severe depression of the time and it affected him greatly as Lord Wraxall states, the King Died in 1936, leaving the crown to Queen Elizabeth who rules still today.
The lord thanks Mr. Colby for a wonderful evening at his home with Mrs. Colby.
As a Ps. The Lord mentions having had a close friend by the same name as Mr. Colby who hunted with the Duke of Beaufort hounds from wales in his personal handwriting, a rare thing indeed.
There are 2 carbon copies of Mr. Colby’s replies to the lord thanking him for a wonderful visit and states that the photograph of the Lord held a special place in his Home....
He tells the Lord he loves the English life He tells the lord that Mrs Colby indeed was happy to have the lord visit her home. The second carbon letter reply on the eve of the Lords sailing back to England, and thanks the Lord for the true spirit he brought to the craft of Masonry He tells the Lord he will be there at the ship to shake his hand upon his leaving on the ship headed home.
(Historical notes- personal letters dated 10th june 1931 just months before his death of pneumonia at 58)George Abraham Gibbs, 1st Baron Wraxall,
PC
(6 July 1873 – 28 October 1931), was a
British
Conservative
politician. In 1906 Gibbs was elected
Member of Parliament
for
Bristol West
(succeeding
Sir Michael Hicks-Beach
), a seat he would hold until 1928. He served as
Parliamentary Private Secretary
to the
Colonial Secretary
Walter Hume Long
(his father-in-law) and as a government whip from 1917 to 1921 in the coalition ministry of
David Lloyd George
. In 1921 he was appointed
Treasurer of the Household
, a post he continued to hold also under
Bonar Law
and
Baldwin
until 1924 and again from 1924 to 1928. Gibbs was admitted to the
Privy Council
in 1923 and in 1928 he was raised to the peerage as
Baron Wraxall
, of Clyst St George in the County of
Devon
. He also served as a colonel in the
North Somerset Yeomanry
.)
George Abraham Gibbs (6 July 1873
–
28 October 1931)
and his wife,
took over. George
was the eldest of Antony and Janet’s 7 sons and
began his career as a soldier. He was later MP
for West Bristol until 1928. He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Wraxall of Clyst St. George in the County of
Devon in 1928. His appointment as Treasurer of the Household was instrumental in his elevation to the peerage.
George Abraham Gibbs and his wife had Crac
e’s
stencilling all painted out, the Norton fireplace removed, the
furniture replaced with Edwardian pieces and the carpet died by Sketchleys. By then the gas lighting had been
replaced by electric lighting. There was damasked silk, stretched on battening on the walls. They were portraying
the room as a Venetian Drawing Room.
George Abraham Gibbs, Lord Wraxall, married firstly Victoria Florence de Burgh Long, (Via) daughter of Walter Hume
Long. Via sadly suffered a string of 9 miscarriages and both of her sons died as infants. Their only surviving child was
a daughter,
Doreen Albinia de Burgh Gibbs
(
born at Tyntesfield on 13 September 1913
), who was understandably
incredibly precious and over-protected. Via died, aged only 39, in 1920 when Doreen was only 6 years old.
In 1927, when Doreen was 14 years old, Lord Wraxall married again
–
the Hon. Ursula Mary Lawley, daughter
of Arthur Lawley, 6th Baron Wenlock. This second marriage produced two boys:
George Richard Lawley Gibbs (16 May 1928 - 19 July 2001),
(known as Richard), and
Eustace Hubert Beilby Gibbs
.
George Abraham was succeeded by his elder son, Richard, the second Lord Wraxall, on 28 October 1931.
Richard was three years old when he succeeded (of interest is the fact that his godmother was Queen Mary of Teck.)
Richard served in the Coldstream Guards and the local Yeomanry regiment.
In 1988 he was kidnapped at Tyntesfield and locked in the boot of his BMW for almost seven hours! Afterwards
according to The Times, he said "Good grief, there's more room in the back than I ever thought". The kidnappers had
knocked him to the ground, one battering him on the head with a plank, and demanded the combination to his safe
and his house keys, but the burglar alarm went off and, in a panic, the raiders bundled Lord Wraxall into the boot of
his car and drove him to woods about two miles away, before making off with his wallet and credit cards.
Richard died unmarried in 2001. He was alone in the house at the time and it is thought he died of an asthma attack.
On his death, the estate was sold.
His brother, the diplomat Sir Eustace Gibbs, is now the third Lord Wraxall. Sir Eustace Gibbs has three sons and two
daughters.

INFO ON THE HONORABLE BAINBRIDGE COLBY
Up for auction are only the items shown in the scans. The Honorable Bainbridge Colby- (Woodrow Wilsons last Secretary of State and Mark Twains lawyer, as well as the man who ratified the 19th amendment which gave woman the right to vote !!!, I have seen on the net that Mr. Colbys autograph alone has sold for between .00 and .00. And since carbon relies of the era did not come with signatures I have decided to add a check and signature so as to add a direct provenance to your acquisition. . He was a gentleman who helped shape the U.S. Political foreign affairs during the 1920's - 1940's. I grew up in his hometown and the caretaker for the family estate called Little Brook Farm, at Sunset Bay, near Bemus Point. The Colby family farms caretaker after Mr. Colbys death in 1950 and Mrs. Colbys death in 1963 was my Sunday school teacher (Mr Sydney Taylor) in the Maple Springs Interdenominational church from when I moved there in 1964 until his death in 1967. Us kids would walk Mr. Taylor home several miles each Sunday after church through the beautiful woods that later became Long State Park after Mr. Taylor passed away and we would help him in his duties of cleaning up the property and my father would haul the truckloads of junk we piled up every few weeks to the Ellery Center Dump which is when I kept a couple small boxes of the stuff and carried around until I began to research it this past two years. I just kick myself now realizing that we must have thrown away several tons of paperwork and old books that were most probably filled with original mark Twain items and other significant words of men and womans gifts, books, manuscripts that today would be a treasure of Americana history. I just thank God that Mr. Taylor told me to save the little bit.

Shipping/ Handling / Coverage Information (Important to read!!)
We adhere very strictly to all of eBays Policies and Rules so please read and understand all of the Auction Houses rules prior to bidding! These policies are in place to protect both the sellers as well as the buyers rights and financial information, as well as keeping frauds and “rippers” from ruining our Auction experiences. The following are just some of the basic rules that apply to all of our auctions and we highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with all of them.
We ship only via U.S.P.S FLAT RATE SERVICES to assure an equitable and fair cost to everyone in the 50 United States.
We believe that everyone needs to start somewhere so we welcome new eBayers, or a buyer who may have had a bad incident (but not repeat offenders).
We practice trustworthy feedback policies for both buyers and sellers. Our expectations are simple, from sellers we expect clear scans, fast response to questions, & good packaging. From buyers we offer great scans, 7 day auctions to give you time to ask all questions& for more scans (please do these requests within the first 3 days of the auction to give us time to respond properly), we expect you to understand that auction items we sell are one of a kind and irreplaceable and therefore the sale is final unless for the obvious reasons stated clearly in our return policies. If we do discuss an issue and decide to offer a refund the buyer is responsible for the return shipping/H/IC and the item must be in the exact condition we sent it (damage due to shipping is dealt with as per return policies). Return payment will not be paid until receipt of the returned product in its original condition!!
We DO NOT SHIP TO ANY ADDRESS OUTSIDE THE 50 UNITED STATES !!! No Exceptions !!!
INFORMATION ON USPS POLICIES AND RETURNS !!!
Again we follow all of eBays policies and regulations and highly recommend that you ask all questions before bidding if you are a new eBayer !!
You cannot be “to educated…” when buying online so we offer as much information as possible to help new ebayers as well as old ones. Below are a lot of issues we have already discussed but we want to impress them upon everyone who is a small time buyer/seller in this great program !!!
eBay can not be held responsible as if they are parents so we all must be aware of policies of the shipping services as well as each other
ALL ITEMS/Documents WILL BE SHIPPED VIA U.S.P.S FLAT RATE !!! (either envelope of box depending on size !!!)
If you have any questions or want specific photos from specific views I have not posted “Please” ask all questions prior to bidding.
We aspire to provide our buyers with great service and will always ship within 3 business days from the date of the processed PayPal payment,
Not from the date of the sale
!!!
However if the sale ends on a Friday we will ship the following Monday as we are over 20 miles from a post office that provides weekend service.
If the following Monday (or Tuesday) are holidays we cannot control that and will ship the first date we can.
This is a rare situation and we try very hard to ship by the 3
rd
day “AFTER” payment is received via PayPal.
Also PayPal is the only payment plan we accept so please be aware of that!!!
YOU MUST OPEN your package if there is obvious damage to it in front of a postal employee (your postman) or you will void the USPS & our return policy !!!
OUR PERSONAL EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES RETURN POLICY FOR OUR CUSTOMERS –
(Although we list item as no returns accepted we do understand that under certain extenuating personal circumstances or an inadvertent error in shipping may occur and we as honest sellers understand this and we will always consider these issues that may arise to help out our customers.
Our basic policies are similar to which eBay already offers (for a fraudulent listing of an item not sent as described). However we also understand that due to the economy and due to some personal emergencies people simply have emergencies beyond their control and we sympathize with these situations. So under these circumstances we offer the buyer the opportunity to contact us immediately before we send the item (preferably) and explain why you need to cancel the purchase.
1) only if item is not as described in our auction. And as our clear scans show! Our auctions are for used/vintage or antique items and our scans and descriptions define any defects in the item and we happily will answer questions or supply more photos prior to bidding!!
2) Buyer must use the same S/H/IC and packaging as it was sent and item must be in the same condition.
3) Any damage due to shipping is covered however buyer must utilize the provided coverage plan (please do not just ship item back and expect us to issue a refund). MUST open obvious damaged packages in front of USPS employee to receive their coverage !!
4) Damaged items/packages must be opened within your local USPS office in front of USPS employee, as resending it to us voids out the coverage and as sellers we lose the item (as well as the sale).
That is why we try to "insist.." buyers (as we have learnt from experience) to open an obviously damaged box in front of a USPS employee for immediate verification of any potential damages that may have occurred due to improper handling of your purchase.
5) We truly package well to limit any breakage, but extenuating situations, such as damages due to shipping.
S/H/IC (we will cover the extra cost out of our sales price to make sure the item is fully covered)!!! PLEASE remember that the 3 day shipping guarantee is from the time and date of your PayPal payment and not from the Date of the sale!!!!! We cannot guarantee a shipping date “until...” the full payment has been processed!!!
Mahalo nui loa for doing business with our small ohana and we hope you are pleased with your purchase as we have held these items since my early childhood and they are as dear to my heart as I hope they become to your family. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your eBay experience...... Rev. Miller
