Unusual political photo of 1987/1988, with Sen. Burdick standing in martial arts pose.
My friend who worked for him told me (April 2021) what she remembered as the back story:
Sen Burdick was up for reelection in 1988. Because he was concerned that some constituents would consider him too old for the job, he had this picture taken to show that he was still fit and able. He really did practice martial arts to keep mentally and physically in shape.
This same friend gave me the autographed photo back when it was originally distributed in the late '80s and she was working in his DC office.
